VIM Team Application

As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to be doers of the Word, not merely hearers. However, listening is an important part of following Jesus - in fact, listening can mean both focusing on what is being said and obeying something we are asked to do. Our willingness to serve to God alongside others should be a result of listening to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and saying, “Here I am, Lord. I will Go”  whether that means crossing the room, crossing the street, or crossing the ocean.

Below are the upcoming mission opportunities:

  • Guatemala- Construction and Disability Ministries- October 31- November 9, 2019
    • In 2 Thessalonians 1:3 Paul reminds us that our faith and our love for each other can, and do, grow at the same time.  It seems a natural part of God’s plan that as we spread our love, our faith deepens.
    • In that context, YOU are invited to “spread the love” and grow your faith during a Volunteers in Mission (VIM) trip to Guatemala scheduled for October 31 – November 9, 2019.  The Conference partnership, Encounter with Christ in Latin America and the Caribbean, is organizing this mission in which we will work with the indigenous Mayan people who live in the Guatemalan Highlands.  Although all details of this adventure have not yet been worked out, the trip will involve a construction component, and ministry to the disabled via a wheelchair distribution.
    • The Mayan population of Guatemala was targeted during the 36-year civil war that lasted from 1960 – 1996.  (Many outsiders now recognize this conflict as a genocide.)  The faith group we will work with, The National Evangelical Primitive Methodist Church of Guatemala, provides a foundation where faith and community grow, side-by-side, to help lift people out of the spiritual and economic hopelessness that are largely resultant of the civil war.  Please prayerfully consider how you might contribute to our efforts to work hand-in-hand with our friends in Guatemala.
    • Volunteers with construction skills, experience working with disabilities, and Spanish language proficiency are particularly encouraged to participate.  There will, however, be a place for anyone who desires to serve others, grow spiritually, and learn about another culture.  TEAM MEMBERS DO NOT NEED TO SPEAK SPANISH. Accommodations will most likely be in a hotel. November weather in the Guatemalan Highlands should be pleasant during the day and cool at night.
  • If you have questions or interest in this trip please contact Encounter liaison, Jodale Barnhart, by e-mail at jodalebarnhart@gmail.com or by phone at 724.753.2821.
